How to use ChatGPT for Sales (23 Unique and Powerful Ways)

How to use ChatGPT for sales

If you thought ChatGPT was only for customer service, think again! This powerful tool can also be used in sales to help reps increase their productivity and close more deals, provide additional marketing support, and improve customer service.

As an active quota-carrying salesperson, business tech blogger, and marketeer, I have invested a stack of time in ChatGPT and I can tell you that if you give yourself the time and the right prompts it can be a game changer.

In this blog post, we’ll share how to use ChatGPT for sales and 23 unique and powerful ways to deploy it.

So without further chit-chat, let’s explore how you can use ChatGPT for sales.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an open-source, state-of-the-art language generation model created by OpenAI. The model is based on the transformer architecture. This means that it has been trained on a huge volume of data from the internet so it can use this data to respond back to human requests.

The goal of ChatGPT is to generate text like it was written by a human. ChatGPT can be used for different tasks, such as answering questions, writing stories, and finishing sentences or paragraphs.

The model can be changed to fit different uses and domains with different training data. This means that it can be added to various applications and systems to provide human-like text generation outputs based on human prompts that are provided to it, aligned to a specific person or company’s need.

How to use ChatGPT for sales?

There are lots of ways ChatGPT can be used to help a sales team become more efficient and close more deals. Some of these include helping with lead generation, qualification, product demos, answering frequently asked questions, honing your ICPs, identifying trends and just being the smartest sounding board you can imagine.

So far, the information on the web has mostly been generated from ChatGPT itself when asking it how it can help with sales.

However, after actively using this in anger within a sales environment, exploring other potential uses and just having a super keen interest in AI technology in general, I have rounded up some ways that you can use ChatGPT for sales right now that you won’t find anywhere else.

23 Unique and Powerful Ways to use ChatGPT for Sales

1. Answer frequently asked questions

When it comes to sales, the sales process can often be filled with miscommunications or unanswered questions from potential customers. ChatGPT can solve some of this by providing answers to frequently asked questions quickly and accurately through online, text-based sales conversations.

This feature can help sales reps even further by automating the sales process when it comes to answering frequently asked questions. By removing mundane tasks, ChatGPT will help salespeople save time and in turn, increase their productivity.

2. Give a more personalized demo of your product

Using ChatGPT to give a more personalized demo of your product is an efficient and effective way for a sales team to provide an immersive experience for customers by training ChatGPT with your text data via an integration.

Customers are instantly attracted to this approach as it removes the hassle of having sales representatives anxiously explain every usage and feature of the product which can often be perceived as salesy or gimmicky.

Let’s let ChatGPT explain…..

3. Create a sense of urgency with potential customers

ChatGPT is a powerful tool for businesses looking to create a sense of urgency and encourage potential customers to move through the purchase process. One way to do this is by using “countdown timers”, which show your customers how much time they have left and trigger them to take action.

This can be particularly effective when used during sales or promotions, as it creates scarcity around that product and drives people to act quickly. Additionally, you can also customize your messages with GIFs, images, text boxes, and more in order to build an emotional connection with customers and make them more invested in completing their purchases.

4. Offer special deals and discounts

ChatGPT is a great platform to offer special deals and discounts to their customers. By leveraging the technology, a business can send automated messages across all of its channels including SMS, chat applications, and more, informing customers of promotional packages and discounts.

The amazing feature offered by ChatGPT is that you don’t necessarily have to remember and manually inform each user individually anymore. With just a few clicks you can invite customers to take part in your special offers and deals, while also setting up limitations such as time-based offers and usage limits if you so choose.

5. Follow up with potential customers after they’ve shown interest in your product

By leveraging its suite of automated bots, you can save time and ensure the right message reaches the right audience at the right time. You can create campaigns that are tailored to each person’s needs and preferences. This will help to make sure your messages are on point, meaningful and timely.

Not only that, but ChatGPT also allows you to use real-time analytics and A/B testing to see which messages have been most effective. In this way, you can continually refine and perfect your follow-up marketing efforts for maximum impact.

6. Website copy

ChatGPT can be a great tool for any business wanting to add or spruce up its website copy quickly and easily. It uses an AI system with Natural Language Processing to illustrate important concepts, themes, and keywords from the brief you provide, and quickly generates written content in a few minutes.

Once generated, the copy can be further optimized based on user preferences such as the length of the copy and topic domain knowledge. Additionally, ChatGPT allows users to control the personality of the final output by adjusting the style from professional to casual as an example.

Be warned though, Google is getting smart at this and it doesn’t want to become an AI copy shop so be sure to add your own personality and a human touch to any outputs and make sure you fact-check!

7. Social media posts

ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can generate topical social media posts with great accuracy. The algorithm used ensures the post matches your message’s intent and suitability for the respective platform.

To use the technology, all you have to do is input a specific keyword relevant to your topic and the platform will generate multiple posts based on it. It also identifies trending hashtags suited to each particular post and offers features that allow users to modify or customize these hashtags.

Your prompts must be specific and don’t be afraid to ask further questions and dive deeper, this is usually where the gold is.

By employing such strategies, ChatGPT helps create engaging posts quickly and effectively, making it easier for you to stay ahead of the competition when it comes to content creation.

8. PPC Ads

ChatGPT is an invaluable tool for Pay Per Click (PPC) ads. The keyword research capabilities allow you to easily identify and validate high-value keyword phrases and quickly determine how competitive the keyword landscape is.

As already said, it can generate copywriting that is creative and compelling, all whilst providing guidance and tips to optimize your landing page for higher conversion rates.

9. Keep track of customer interactions and sales data

It’s not very often I will do this, but ChatGPT hits the mark out the gate so I am going to copy and paste to give the answer on this one!

10. Personalized product recommendations

By integrating ChatGPT into an existing website, you can leverage the large language model of ChatGPT to create tailored responses to customer inquiries.

With its powerful database, ChatGPT can be used to automatically suggest products and services that fit the customer’s needs based on their inquiry as well as past history and behaviors.

Additionally, its automated data-driven platform allows customers to ask a variety of questions and interact with it in a natural conversation flow for fast solutions that are tailored precisely for them.

11. Unique and targeted email campaigns

ChatGPT presents a unique approach to email campaigns that lets you take advantage of the latest trends in artificial intelligence. With ChatGPT, you can quickly create personalized emails that are tailored to individual subscribers based on their interests, past purchases, and more.

By allowing you to automate email recommendations, generate conversation threads and tailor relevant content for each recipient, ChatGPT helps you make sure each subscriber gets targeted content tailored specifically for them.

If you spend too much time on emails and like the idea of that then checkout the latest email writing tools that you can embed in your inbox to help with writing, personalization and a ton more!

12. Deal strategy

Crafting the perfect deal strategy is one of the most critical aspects when looking to secure new clients, especially if the deal has a long sales cycle with multiple stakeholders.

Although I wouldn’t recommend telling ChatGPT to devise your deal strategy and just running with it, it can be really valuable to use it as a soundboard and to get deeper into your own thinking and put yourself in your buyer’s shoes.

You may think you already know what your deal strategy should be based on previous sales and where the sweet spots of your product are. However, I challenge you to use ChatGPT to dig deeper into your strategy and see if it can uncover angles and options for you to explore to either validate it or help you further develop it.

13. Honing your Ideal Client Profile (ICP)

ChatGPT allows you to set up focus groups and target specific questions to customers in order to get feedback about products or services. This information can be extremely valuable when trying to determine what changes need to be made in order to better appeal to your target market.

Additionally, using ChatGPT can help you save time and money by allowing you to quickly gather data from a large number of people without having to conduct in-person interviews.

14. Identifying new target markets

ChatGPT is a powerful tool for entrepreneurs and business owners looking to identify new opportunities for growth. It can also assist in generating new business ideas that perhaps you haven’t thought of.

This technology works by analyzing customer conversations to determine the interests, activities, and needs of consumers in real-time; from here, insights can be gained on how best to reach them with tailored messages and products.

Additionally, it can even provide deeper insights into each market segment by measuring social media engagement and website visits.

In short, ChatGPT provides valuable insights that can be actively used to implement more intelligent marketing strategies and uncover potential new sources of revenue.

15. Summarise proposal content

If you are in sales, you will know that decision-makers won’t often read a full proposal but you want to keep them informed throughout the sales cycle. This is where ChatGPT can come in.

To do it, simply copy and paste the text you want to summarize from your proposal tool or document into the text box and tell ChatGPT what kind of output you want along with who the reader will be. That is critical for the best output.

For example, you might say:

‘Please summarise this content within 2 short and concise paragraphs. The output will be used within an email body to send an update to the CFO on the proposal we have just sent to the procurement team. Focus your output on the cost savings our solution will provide, including numbers in a table, as well as the financial risk to them if they don’t deploy our solution before the new financial accounting rules come into force in April.’

Then amend as you need but it will give you a great head start on pulling out the most critical information and help you win more competitive proposal bids.

16. Provide online support to customers

Online support can cost a business a ton of time and money if it isn’t automated in the most efficient way. This is where ChatGPT’s natural language processing comes in. It can be deployed within your existing customer support platform or deployed as a stand-alone customer service chatbot.

Once trained on your products, services, common questions, and troubleshooting steps it can be deployed within live chat or messaging scenarios, capturing all the data for analysis as it goes.

17. Generate lead magnets

Lead magnets have become increasingly popular with the crackdown on gathering personal information. ChatGPT can be used to give the outline or even the finished lead magnet if you are feeling lazy!

For example, if you are a web copywriter looking to gain clients that are struggling with developing engaging web copy, you might ask ChatGPT to ‘create a 61-step checklist for engaging web copy’. You can then market that and offer your ICP it in return for their contact details.

The contact details would go into your marketing sequences with the aim of converting them into a client in the future.

18. Qualification questions

This is an interesting one as ChatGPT can help whether you sell online to individual people or are in enterprise sales.

ChatGPT can deliver a baseline set of questions to support your qualification framework, whether that’s BANT, MEDDPICC, or something else. It can support you on the types of questions you need to get into your conversations and even what the responses might mean.

Be sure to tell ChatGPT what sectors you are selling into, the types of stakeholders you will speak with, and what you are selling – this will target the output where you need it.

19. Data entry

Training ChatGPT can not only provide unique insights and improve customer service but it can also help take the manual and repetitive tasks away from salespeople. It can assist with lead capture to automatically store lead data in your CRM, as well as enrich that data with social media profiles, full company details, and contact information.

On top of this, it can assist with lead scoring and populating the data points required to best prioritize your lead pool. It can also be integrated into your overall sales and marketing tech stack to ensure all data is synced across the required systems.

21. Recommendations for top sales resources

If you wanted to improve your cold calling skills and were looking for books…..

22. Generate a great subject line and intro hook for your outreach

Hooks are so important when reaching out cold to prospects. If you haven’t yet automated all your sales outreach or want to keep a personal touch then ChatGPT can help with writing emotion-evoking hooks that are more likely to get a prospect to read past the first few words.

Use ChatGPT to bounce some hook ideas around for content titles, email subject lines, social media headlines, and so on. It can follow frameworks such as AIDA or PAS and with the right prompts will generate compelling hooks that I was quite surprised about!

23. Generate call scripts

ChatGPT can generate great call scripts to give you a baseline to work from and give you a unique perspective. Here’s a prompt with things to think about:

Things to Consider when using ChatGPT for Sales

Although ChatGPT can help your sales efforts, there are also some key limitations that you need to be aware of to make sure you don’t overstep its use.

  1. It only has access to data pre-2021. Anything after 2021, then GPTs language model hasn’t been trained on it.
  2. Factual information isn’t always correct. If it gives facts or you ask it to cite sources you must validate these as often they aren’t quite accurate or are simply plain wrong!
  3. You get out what you put in – it is all in the prompt. This is the same for any conversational AI platform but it’s something you must remember when asking ChatGPT to do things.
  4. It has been known to generate inappropriate or harmful content if prompted with inappropriate requests so be aware of that if deploying to customers via integrations or standalone chatbots.
  5. If you operate in non-English speaking countries then you must consider ChatGPT’s language limitations. Although it has been trained in multiple languages, the training data and language generation capabilities differ for each language so something to be aware of.

ChatGPT has no personal experiences so everything it writes is based on a mass analysis of text data. To get personalization into its outputs, it’s always good to review and add your personality to the content for the best end result.

Can you train ChatGPT with your data?

Yes, you can train ChatGPT with your data. This is where ChatGPT becomes so much more than a conversational interface between you and machine. This is where it can truly add value directly to your customer base with little to no involvement from you once it’s trained and deployed.

It can however be a complex process so you should explore this before you jump in. There are lots of recourses online on how to collect your training data and train the data models. OpenAI also provides resources and tutorials to help you start fine-tuning the data model.

Integrating ChatGPT into your business

OpenAI provides APIs that allow developers to access and use its language models, including ChatGPT, in their own applications and systems.

You can use the API to send user queries to ChatGPT and receive its generated responses, which can then be displayed on your website as part of your sales process, such as personalized recommendations based on interactions, or your customer service offerings.

It’s worth noting that while ChatGPT can provide quick and efficient responses, there may still be some limitations to its ability to handle complex or unique customer issues. You may still need human customer service representatives to assist with these cases but ChatGPT, if trained correctly, should filter out all the easy stuff.
